Addendum

To make the "Fundamental Checkmates" post easier to understand I have added some example positions.

Comments:
Just a comment to show that your diagrams are looked at with interest. I think every 5333+1 problemsolver has this in mind but no time to make it so clear.
 
It's interesting how this clarification of checkmates came out of reading that book. I have spent plenty of time doing checkmate problems from other sources, and not one of them made me think, "Hey there really was a small total number of underlying patterns here". Kind of odd, really.
