Are We Saying It Right?
We say we are learning tactics. Yet we all know a fork, pin, or a skewer when we see one. It seems odd to say that, as if we are learning this for the first time. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say we are learning to
- recognize tactical possibilities in a position,
- accurately calculate and visualize resulting positions,
- and assess every possible response that could refute the line.

The same holds true for positional play. We all know what weak squares, outposts, bishoppair, 7th rank, halfopen lines, minority attack, majority on the Queenside, plan, worst piece, unsafe king, hanging pawns etc. are.
But the ability to use these tools is a complete different story.
